JIM SHIRLAW FOR THE 66 PROJECT

Jim Shirlaw on his artwork for The 66 Project

Lately i’ve been involved with Sydney band The Preachers creating artwork for both their upcoming ‘66 Project’ release as well as for it’s recording wrap party, last night (01.06.11) at Low 302 Crown St Darlinghurst. Involving a recording process over six months with the objective of creating six accomplished recordings, The 66 Project consists of largely self-produced/engineered home recordings by the band’s members as well as in some of Sydney’s most well-accredited studios including BJB’s Quad Eight Room and 301. The project also sought to reach out and involve a varied collection of artists and designers including Saint Augustine Academy, Tara Cook, myself and many others. Below is the poster for the wrap party as well as the front and reverse cover of the album art l made which the band reproduced with a copy of the album into a limited run of one hundred copies as a special free give away at the party last night. The seemingly lo-fi analog recordings pieced together from various studio and home recordings contributed to the hand-drawn aesthetic on my part, the band seemed pleased with the visual translation. It was a very busy and exciting night to a band that have well earned their loyal following!

INSTYLE MAGAZINE JUNE ISSUE

Not wanting to dwell too much on the history of tacky father/daughter media stunts (ala Sally Singleton), this month’s Instyle Magazine is running a feature on me and my dad, an australian chef. Though the story is glassy, the actual shoot was a beautiful day of good food and music spent with Simon Day, Aleesha Dibbs, Chris Joannou and my family.

Group Work Assignment - The 66 Project
Student(s):
Izzi, Gideon, Jak, Thomas & Luke - ‘The Preachers’
Title of Work: The 66 Project
Grade given: TBC
Comments:

There’s some exciting work here, Preachers! I’d go so far as to say you might be thinking about doing something bigger together this year or next? Perhaps an EP? Perhaps some time away from Australia?

Not getting too far ahead of ourselves though - we’ve delivered on our promise of 6 songs in 6 months and to top it off we’re planning a free show at Low 302 on June 1st. Confirmed on-stage guests and glitterati include Simon Day from Rat Cat, James Domeyko of Domeyko/Gonzalez, Hero Fisher - and some other incredibly talented friends.

It’s been very gratifying to give things away during the Project. We’ve been lucky to work with Tony Buchen at BJB and 301 - despite what that may sound like it was a one-day affair in which we recorded 5 songs and finished 4. Recording in the front room of Thomas’ house is the antithesis of that experience; lots of DIY and another 4 songs completed (the last of which - “A Want So Strong” was released today). Working with Tara Cook, Saint Augustine Academy, the ever generous Aref Jaroudy from Low Bar, Photographers Jimmy Pozarick and Lucy Parakhina

We’re very much focused now on getting together a statement of our work so far. An EP is in the can for late 2011/early 2012, and hopefully more shows. I know we’re only too excited to share it all with you.
